Triple Crown Information
By Kelly Coughlin

The Kentucky Derby is one of the three races for three-year-old thoroughbreds that make up horse racing's Triple Crown. The other two races are the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Belmont Stakes, at Belmont Park in Belmont, New York. Very few horses have stood up to the task of winning all three races.

Winners of the Triple Crown are:

  • 1919 Sir Barton (ridden by John Loftus)
  • 1930 Gallant Fox (ridden by Earle Sands)
  • 1935 Omaha (ridden by William Saunders)
  • 1937 War Admiral (ridden by Charles Kurtsinger)
  • 1941 Whirlaway (ridden by Eddie Arcaro)
  • 1943 Count Fleet (ridden by John Longden)
  • 1946 Assault (ridden by Warren Mehrtens)
  • 1948 Citation (ridden by Eddie Arcaro)
  • 1973 Secretariat (ridden by Ron Turcotte)
  • 1977 Seattle Slew (ridden by Jean Cruguet)
  • 1978 Affirmed (ridden by Steve Cauthen)
